Hidden Gotchas of Google Mobile Usability Issues

Are you getting unexplained ‘Clickable elements too close together’ or similar in Google’s Search Console? Me too…

Google’s dreaded ‘Why pages aren’t usable on mobile’ dashboard.

I’ve recently been tackling SEO for a low-cost online HR Software system (JuiceHR.com) I have been working on, and part of that process has been trying to generate genuinely useful content for visitors.

Rather than spend huge amounts on advertising, we thought we’d invest in writing up detailed usage notes and articles about the product and the HR industry itself.

Like the majority of websites, many of the content pages follow a standard template. I put a lot of effort into Google’s Mobile first strategy and checked PageSpeed Insights for load speeds and general Mobile (and Desktop) performance which ranked extremely highly.

That’s why I was extremely surprised to find some (and only some) of my pages were reporting these types of errors:

  • Text too small to read
  • Clickable elements too close together
  • Content wider than screen

Excuse me, Google? How can that be?

As I said, I used a standard template and the majority of our pages were indexing just fine.
