Why there is no American alternative to the British National Health Service

As a British citizen who moved to the US three years ago, I care deeply about the future of the National Health Service back in the UK.

Why?

Quite simply because I’ve seen first hand how the American health care system operates, and I wouldn’t wish that on my family and friends back home. (If you’d like to hear this from an Americans perspective of the NHS in the UK, I recommend viewing Rob Delaney’s heart felt video here).

I wrote this article to help illustrate why privatising the NHS in favor of the the non-unified American health care model isn’t in the interest of anyone that lives in the UK.

Good healthcare needs deep pockets

I moved to Austin, Texas in 2017 as a co-founder of a well funded technology startup. One of the perks of that role is a generously contributed company health care for my family of five. Each year, the company ‘contributes’ nearly $35,000 towards our health care plan.

You read that right. Thirty five thousand dollars every year for two adults and three kids.

After the premiums comes the co-pay
